Householders are receiving the first of three 200 euro electricity credits today.
The government will be providing 2.2 million account holders a total of 600 euro in credits over the next six months in an effort to tackle the cost of living crisis.
The second and third payments will be paid in January/February and March/April.
Susanne Rodgers of Social Justice Ireland is concerned the credit will be used for paying off arrears:
We're so conscious that there's a lot of households who may be don't need the energy credit, and then there's lots of households where this isn't really going to go far enough. So, I would have a concern me maybe that, that €200 may already get eaten up with arrears."
