It's the largest project of its kind to date in Ireland, with the County Council teaming up with the the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, to convert the former East Tip site into a 22-acre People's Park.

The extensive remediation of the former tip cost 25 million euro.

The Haulbowline Island Park now offers visitors 4kms of fully accessible pathways, a 1km jogging circuit, playing pitches and seating areas overlooking Cork Harbour.

The harbour is the second largest in the world.

Among the dignateries present at the official opening earlier today were, the Mayor of County Cork - Cllr Gillian Coughlan, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Defence Simon Coveney and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath.

Speaking to RedFM News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that the park reflects an ongoing government commitment to active transport, greenways, walkways and cycleways:

"It's the largest ever remediation project undertaken in the country. I think it's been transformed into a wonderful ammenity and park for the people of the region, for the people of the district. And I think it reflects the ongoing government commitment now in terms of greater investment in ammenities more generally, particularly active transport, greenways, walkways, cycleways and so forth."
