Greyhound Racing Ireland has published a report which they say highlights the importance of the industry to the Cork economy

The report compiled by economist Jim Power shows that the industry made a net contribution to the Irish economy of €132.3 million in 2019 and supported over 4,000 full-time and part-time jobs.

Cork leads the way in terms of the number of active owners in the country with 15% of owners based here along with 9% of the trainers

In recent times a number of peaceful protests have been staged at Curraheen Park by Greyhound Awareness Cork calling for an outright ban on greyhound racing in Ireland
The group have been highlighting how some dogs in the industry are treated and the lack of traceability

However, today's report highlights the care and welfare initiatives progressed by Greyhound Racing Ireland during the past two years, including the provision of care and foster care centres, the introduction of an expanded inspection programme for greyhound establishments, the operation of a Greyhound Injuries Support Scheme, and the commissioning of a Traceability System.
