Gardaí have objected to the licence renewal of a city centre pub after the street behind the pub was closed off for the All Ireland Hurling Final in August.

Rearden's on Washington Street closed Hanover Street to show the game between Cork and Limerick on a large TV screen.

Gardaí objected to the renewal of the licence for Rearden's at Cork District Court following the hurling final on the 20th of August last.

Inspector Martin Canny told Judge Marian O'Leary that Gardaí had spoken to the management prior to the game about their concerns in relation to the TV screens and said what happened on the day was a 'blatant disregard of the licence.'

The paper reports defence senior counsel Michael McGrath admitted the pub had been wrong on the day and had learned it's lesson.

He told the court that it had not breached Covid guidelines and that to close the place down for one act of wrongdoing would be disproportionate.

Judge O'Leary will make a decision on the case on the 3rd of December.
