The Garda watchdog is investigating a crash in County Cork that's claimed the life of a teenage boy.
The 16-year-old from Cork city died when the car he was travelling in crashed on the M8 near Mitchelstown at about 1 o'clock this morning.
Four other teenagers, including the driver, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
It's understood the car was travelling the wrong way down the motorway at the time of the head-on collision with another car.
The other driver, a woman in her 30s, was seriously injured.
Southern Correspondent with the Irish Independent, Ralph Riegel explains why GSOC is investigating:
"GSOC are also investigating on the basis that one of the vehicles involved had come to Garda attention. In the minutes before the tragedy. The scene remains sealed off pending the work of data forensic collision investigators, and one of the primary theories being examined at the moment is that the vehicle which was carrying the teens was travelling in the wrong direction."
