Garda Investigation Launched Into Serious Assault Yesterday In Which Man (59) Almost Bleed To Death After His Artery Was Severed

Gardaí are investigating a serious assault yesterday, in which a 59-year-old man almost bleed to death after he suffered a slash wound to the head, which severed an artery.

The incident occurred in Magazine Road on the southside of the city.

Gardaí found the injured man in a bedroom with a towel, trying to staunch a wound to his head, when officers responded to a call at around quarter-to-five yesterday evening.

He had been hit with a bottle and was bleeding profusely.

He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and several blood transfusions,

The man is now understood to be in a serious but stable condition, after earlier been critical.

It's understood that a number of men, who are living in the rented house, had been drinking on New Year's Day when a row broke out and one man hit the victim with a bottle.

Gardaí arrested a Latvian man at the scene for a public order offence after the man.

He was intoxicated, and became very aggressive and threatening towards officers in the house.

The man was arrested and taken to Togher Garda Station, where he is being questioned about the assault on his house-mate.

Gardaí are appealing to the public for assistance - and are particularly anxious to talk to anyone who saw or heard any disturbance in the area.
