Fota Wildlife Park is to remain closed for a number of weeks following an outbreak of bird flu
Eleven confirmed cases of avian flu have been identified in the Greylag Goose population
The outbreak originated from wild bird populations in the Cork Harbour area and has led to the construction of new temporary aviaries to house birds throughout the winter months and limit the risk of further infection
Aileen Tennant, Director, Fota Wildlife Park says they had to take the difficult decision to humanely euthanise some of their Greylag geese
"We are working in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine to undertake a number of mitigation measures to limit the spread of avian influenza. As a result, and based on expert veterinary advice, we've had to take the difficult but necessary action to euthanise some of our affected Greylag geese"
