The Forsa Trade Union has written again to Cork City Council, seeking meaningful engagement regarding the ongoing harassment and abuse of Cork City Library workers in their Workplace.

A solidarity protest took place outside the city’s main library on Friday.

Hundreds of people attended the march, while around 20 people who are opposed to an LGBT+ book also staged a demonstration.

In a letter to Library management, Forsa have called on the council to protect library workers, while the trade union has also refuted management claims that members were not consulted on the protest last Friday.

Fórsa official Liz Fay once again called for Cork City Council to act to protect library workers.

“Fórsa has repeatedly sought for measures to be implemented to protect staff, including an independent health and safety risk assessment of libraries that encompasses the threat of protesters and “far right” groups entering the library and interacting with staff, for Cork City Council to engage robustly with An Garda Síochána on an emergency response measures, and for Library Bye-Laws to be updated as a matter of urgency, exploring all legal measures possible for the permanent exclusion of repeat offenders including the use of injunctions,” she said.

Ms Fay also refuted management claims that members were not consulted on last Friday’s solidarity protest.

“It is not for the employer to state as fact that Fórsa did not engage properly with our members in the lead up to the solidarity march of last Friday. Our members were consulted and engaged with at all times, in the lead up to and on the morning of the solidarity march,” she said.

“We would have preferred to not have to resort to the solidarity march of last week, but the lack of engagement between City management and this union on behalf of members has been remarkably one sided."
