A forensic psychiatrist who assessed a man charged with the murder of his brother and the attempted murder of his father has said that that the accused was suffering from “paranoid schizophrenia” when the attack occurred.

44-year-old John Murphy Jnr of Seaview in Carrigaline, is on trial at a sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Cork charged with the murder of his 27 year old brother Shane and the attempted murder of his 75 year old father John Aloysius “Weeshie” Murphy Senior.

His defence barristers are attempting to prove that at the time of the offence Mr Murphy Jnr “was effectively not guilty by reason of insanity.”
