Firefighters say they are remaining positive despite City Councillors voting against the immediate reopening of Ballincollig Fire Station.
At last night's special meeting, which was called after the signing of a Section 140 notice, councillors voted overwhelmingly against reopening and staffing the fire station full time
Councillors were told that funding the €4.6m annual cost of the station could only happen through rising rates or rents, increasing parking costs or cutting services.
Firefighters say they are taking comfort in remarks made by the Council CEO, who told the meeting that if the ongoing Workplace Relations Commission process leads to a reopening of Ballincollig station and extra funding is required, then that will form part of the budgetary process.
Speaking to RedFM News, SIPTU rep and Cork City Firefighter Billy Crowley says he doesn't understand where the figures are coming from.
"For us it isn't a closed door, if you like. I don't understand where those figures are coming from. I know from the chief executive's report to Council, there was 40 firefighters stationed out in Ballincollig.
"I'm at a loss to find out where that figure is coming from - that's not what anyone is looking for."
