Farmers are likely to be told next week how much they've to cut their methane emissions by.

The Environment Minister hopes to reduce emissions in the agriculture sector by 30%, while the Farming Minister is hoping for a 22% cut.

Both ministers are meeting today, while at the same time an Oireachtas agriculture committee is discussing the issue.

Professor of Physical Geography at Maynooth University, Peter Thorne, told TDs and senators the issue of greenhouse gas goes beyond Irish farms:

"It is making it somebody else's problem for the vast majority of the population who are not farmers. If farmers were successful in getting to net zero, we would still miss our 51% reduction target because two thirds of our emissions arise from the non agricultural sectors."
