A relative of one of the residents of the Owenacurra Residential Mental Health facility has vowed to fight the HSE all the way.

She was responding to the news that some residents of the Midleton facility are at various stages of being transferred to Unit 3 of St Stephen's Hospital outside Glanmire.

The Mental Health Commission published a damming report on the unit at Sarsfield Court last December, calling its system of governance 'inexplicable'.

Owenacurra had been originally been due to close in June 2021, but remains open as replacement locations heave not yet been found for many of its residents.

Speaking to RedFM News, a sister of one of the residents, Maureen O'Sullivan says residents needed people to advocate for them.

"I don't think the HSE expected that they would have relatives that stood up for them. I'm not going to accept what's happening. I'll fight them all the way.

"There are people who are elderly, they don't have any relatives at all. One of the people that moved to Sarsfield Court was completely resigned, and felt there was no option."
