An emergency response group established in response to a rise in overdoses on synthetic opiods in Cork is not sustainable into the future.

The sudden emergence of nitazene, which is up to 500 times more powerful than heroin, resulted in 20 overdoses in Cork and 57 in Dublin at the end of last year .

In an effort to respond to the overdoses the National Red Alert Group was established but the group is now urging the Government to ringfence resources to prepare for future supplies of the nitazene hitting the country.
