An Emergency Management Team is in place at MTU after the university was targetted in a ransomware attack

The incident was detected by MTU IT security systems last weekend, and immediate steps were taken to intercept and manage the incident.

Around 13,000 students and 1,200 staff are affected and MTU’s campuses in Cork will remain closed until next Monday, and will reopen on a phased basis.

Paul Gallager Vice President of MTU says the nature and extent of the incident including what data may have been breached remains under investigation and has advised that students and staff do not need to take any action at this time

Speaking to RedFM News in the past few minutes Paul Gallagher says they are hopeful that they can have on site learning back up and running at their four campuses from Monday as the network is secured.

"The beginning of this week was concentrated on the IT response, we're very much now concentrating on students and staff and getting them back into the campus.

"There will not be network connectivity at that time, but we are doing everything we can now to enable classes to proceed as normal.

"We have a lot of experience from the pandemic, online worked well, but it's either online or on campus, we found the blended approach difficult to manage so we are aiming for on campus.@
