A local councillor in Youghal has described the tragic deaths of two men yesterday while taking part in an Ironman event as 'devastating'.

Both men died in separate incidents during the swimming portion of the Ironman 70.3 competition.

The athletes received immediate medical attention but died at the scene.

Canadian national Ivan Chittenden (64) was believed to be from Toronto and on holidays in Ireland with family members, while Meath native Brendan Wall (44) had been living in England for a number of years.

"We share our greatest sympathies with the families and friends of the athletes and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time," organisers said in a statement.

The County Council said it is "deeply saddened" about the deaths and is grateful to the response agencies involved, including Fire and Emergency personnel, for "their unwavering efforts" to save the men.

Speaking to RedFM News, local East Cork Councillor Mary Linehan-Foley says the people of Youghal are shocked.

"Just devastating, and our thoughts and prayers are with both families," she said.

"Very sad, very sad news."

"The people people of Youghal, Cork County Council and Ironman will be fully supportive of both families and their needs," she added.
