The Garda Commissioner says Cork will be the next location for High Visibility Garda Patrols
Justin Kelly told the Justice Committee over 11,000 people applied to become a garda over two recruitment campaigns this years
190 officers will begin work at stations across the country from Friday, with over 220 new trainees due to enter Templemore later this month.
The Commissioner says the rise in numbers means they can increase garda visibility on the streets with Cork the next location for increased presence
"The public and business community have already seen the benefits of our Dublin city centre high visibility policing initiative. Many crimes are down, such as theft from the person, down 28% robbery from an establishment, down 9% we will be replicating this initiative in our cities and major urban centres around the country - Cork will be next"
