Figures released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that nationally over 10,000 patients were admitted to hospitals and were treated on trolleys.

426 children under the age of 16 were admitted without a bed last month.

Cork University Hospital is consistently the second most overcrowded hospital in the country and last month 1,041 people were treated on trolleys at the facility.

The INMO says February was an incredibly challenging month for nurses and midwives working in the public health service and the union is calling for the introduction of medium and long-term
plans to help resolve the overcrowding issues.

The union says their members are working in extremely unsafe conditions which are overcrowded and short staffed and this has a very profound impact on the level of care their members are able to provide to patients.
