A Cork TD says it is 'mind blowing' to hear that efforts to build a new elective hospital in Cork were held up for eight months because one Government department did not pass documents to another.

Colm Burke was speaking following a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee where the Secretary General of the Department of Public Expenditure David Moloney said his department only received a proposal regarding the project from the Department of Health on the 27th of September.

HSE sent the proposal for the hospital to the Department of Health eight months earlier in January.

A decision on a site for the new hospital was expected earlier this month and is now expected some time during or after November.

TD Colm Burke told David Moloney that the delay is very frustrating:

"We haven't even gotten to planning stage, we haven't even started that process. Why does it take 10 months to come to a decision where everyone accepts we need to build this hospital?"
