Sinn Fein says the government has time to push through emergency legislation on special education if it needs to.

The opposition party has described the lack of places for children with special educational needs as a 'scandal.'

It was confirmed this week a legal process has been started, to compel schools to open places, but campaigners are worried it'll take too long.

Sinn Fein Education Spokesperson Donnchadh O'Laoghaire, says there is time to get legislation through if the process is started soon:

"If there is a need for emergency legislation that is possible, I do believe there is the time there are four or five weeks left, or if not more, within the Dáil term, and certainly we would be keen to engage with the minister she brings forward emergency legislation to ensure, and this is a fundamental rights that every child has access to an education."
