A West Cork TD has accused the government and Cork County Council of letting residents of Dursey island go hungry.

The Dursey Island Cable Car service, connecting the island to the mainland, closed last April for major upgrades - and had been due to reopen this month.

However, delays to the 1.2 million euro project mean the cable car now may not become operational until 2023.

Recent bad weather left the temporary ferry service unable to access the island.

Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Michael Collins says islanders need weekly food drops to the island by helicopter:

"The number of people living on the island and I've been speaking to one gentleman even today that hasn't been able to access the mainland since the end of September. For their basic goods no they're living on food which in freezers and it's very unfair situation that should be I have a couple of drop there are several times during the week to give people an opportunity to at least get the basics the food for themselves the human beings and their animals the health of other animals while that can be walked from being completed or injured or going hungry."

RedFM News has contacted the County Council for comment.
