A Cork senator is calling for the Health Minister to do everything he can to speed up the introduction of legislation to govern the storing and disposal of human tissue.

Tim Lombard made the call after the families of 18 babies whose organs were incinerated along with medical waste without their knowledge by Cork University Maternity Hospital were told that the release of a report into the scandal was being delayed again.

Families have complained of several delays in releasing the draft report and are calling for it to be released immediately.

It was due to be given to families at the end of last month, however none of the families have yet received a copy.

The Human Tissues Bill has been discussed since 2006 and was due to be brought to the Oireachtas by the end of last year.

Senator Tim Lombard says the delay is inexcusable.
