Cork Senator Jerry Buttimer says he hopes the US President visits Cork the next time he comes to Ireland.

As Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Senator Buttimer was on hand along with the Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl to welcome President Joe Biden to Leinster House yesterday.

Senator Buttimer says he believes it is very important from an economic and a tourism point of view that Cork is on the President's agenda.

He pointed out how two large American companies such as Dell EMC and Apple have a big presence in Cork and are among the city's biggest employers.

Speaking to RedFM News Senator Buttimer says the relationship between Cork and the US is extremely important and it's vital that we continue to work to strengthen our economies:

"America and Ireland have 140 billion worth of trade between them. So that's very important, notwithstanding the number of jobs created, and investments. So from our perspective, America is very important to us. From a country point of view, we have 290,000 people directly employed here from American companies, and 167,000 indirectly. So that's huge from a regional development point of view. But equally from a Cork perspective; we are the home of two of the biggest employers in Cork, which are American, and therefore that's important that we we have that relationship established and continue".
