A Cork Senator has called for the conservation of a historic castle in West Cork to be prioritised.

Senator Tim Lombard was talking about Desmond Castle in Kinsale this week.

The castle is managed by the Office of Public Works, but has been closed for the past 5 years.

Major restoration works are needed and the OPW has no immediate plans to reopen the castle.

Speaking in Seanad Éireann this week, Senator Tim Lombard called for the Minister and the OPW to detail the restoration timeline:

"Unfortunately, it's been closed since 2018. We've been trying to find a pathway to make sure that we can actually get the OPW to carry out conservation works required so we can reopen this really important part of kin sales heritage, but we have to have movement. It doesn't work unless we get a pathway when the Minister is going to ensure that the OPW will finish the report are proposing to do and actually get boots on the ground".
