New research from University College Cork is aiming to tackle childhood obesity with a breakthrough probiotic strain.
1 in 5 Irish children are classified as overweight or obese according to the World Health Organisation.
Speaking to RedFM News, UCC researcher Dr Harriet Schellekens says the new microbiome based strategy will help combat high childhood obesity rates
"Obesity is a disease, and it's not just a question of move more and eat less, it's more of a question of eat better. I think the microbiome targeted approaches can be helpful there to introduce microbes that have proven beneficial effects straight away from the get go, in combination with trying to make these small improvements to your diet"
