Host of the "I'm Grand Mam" podcast PJ Kirby from Blarney Street in the city aims to raise €20,000 during Pride Month to help LGBT Ireland to hire a key support worker who would engage with people who have suffered homophobic attacks as well as people who are homeless or who need family support.
LGBT Ireland is a national charity that advocates for stronger legislation to combat incitement to hatred and hate crimes.
The campaign has raised almost €5,600 in five days.
Speaking to RedFM News, PJ Kirby outlines why he set up the fundraising campaign:
"Evan Somers was attacked in April right around the corner from The George, which is a gay bar in Dublin and he fractured his eye socket and he dislocated his ankle. There was recently a lesbian couple attacked -Robin and Kate- and they set up a GoFundMe straight after that to help with their medical costs, which was amazing obviously, but then I felt like as a community we were all feeling a bit like helpless and a bit like there's nothing we can really do. All these attacks are taking place, but there's nothing really proactive happening to help support people who've been homophobically attacked or who are at risk of it."
