Cork County Council is to mount a campaign highlighting gender violence and starting a conversation around it.
It comes after Fine Gael Cllr Eileen Lynch submitted a motion on gender violence at a recent Council meeting on foot of the murder of Tullamore school teacher Ashling Murphy who was attacked and killed as she went for an afternoon run.
Cllr Lynch says many women are subjected to commentary that their male counterparts do not have to put up with and she says it's time for change.
Speaking to RedFM News, she says she's hopeful that the Council will roll out a media campaign on gender violence in an effort to work on getting rid of it from society:
"I brought it up in light of what happened to Ashling Murphy in Tullamore two weeks ago. But I think it's such a prominent matter in our society and it's one that I think is actually potentially getting worse and we've seen a lot of that throughout COVID as well. I suppose, particularly then as a young woman, I'm sick of seeing these issues in our society, and I'm sick of being told things I cannot do, because I'm a woman, because it's not safe to do"
