Cork City’s Crime Prevention Officer is warning homeowners to be vigilant of bogus trades people.

Gardaí say reports of people being scammed out of paying deposits for gardening or building work have spiked in recent weeks.

Speaking to RedFM News, Sergeant Michael O’Connell says a reliable contractor will never ask for a deposit for a job:

"They can often call to a house and agree a price and before the work is carried out. A real contractor would never ask for a deposit, these people, they may look for a deposit, and that may be the last time you ever see them."
