Cork City Councillors have voted against reopening Ballincollig Fire Station.
At last night's special meeting of Cork City Council, Councillors voted 18-5 against reopening and staffing the fire station full time, with three abstentions
According to a report in the Irish Examiner, Councillors were told that funding the €4.6m annual cost of the station could only happen through rising rates or rents, increasing parking costs or cutting services.
Councillors were also informed that the fire statiion requires a €3m upgrade in order to adapt the building for a full time fire service, and that none of the expenditure had been provided for in the Council's budget for this year.
Addressing the meeting last night, Cork City Council Chief Executive Ann Doherty said that a full time service was not required for Ballincollig, with the town's station ground having an incident rate of approximately 230 incidents a year, in comparison with Anglesea Street with 1,541 and Ballyvolane with 1,117.
