A Cork City Councillor says parents are turning to loan sharks to meet the cost of communions.

Councillor Ken O'Flynn is calling on the catholic church and schools to discuss the pressure that their children's First Holy Communion day is having on people.

It's reported that parents are spending up to 3000 euro on communion celebrations and Councillor O'Flynn is suggesting that each school should hold a group celebration so there's less pressure for parents to throw a large celebration for each child.

Speaking to RedFM News, Councillor Ken O'Flynn says people have approached him in tears over the cost of communion dresses:

"I think it's high time that the Catholic Church and our primary schools came together and look for alternatives when it comes to the high prices of communion. I have parents coming to me now telling me that it's costing €1500 to €3000  in some cases, just to keep up with people to give their child the same day that every other child is experiencing in the school. The costs are enormous, when it comes to communions and what has to be done now for communions."
