Cork City Councillors have voted against a debate on re-instating the eviction ban.

Last night's Council meeting came to an abrupt end when 13 councillors voted against a debate on reinstating the eviction ban while 12 councillors voted for the debate.

The meeting was proposed by Sinn Fein Councillors calling on the council to write to the Housing Minister requesting that the eviction ban be re-instated immediately.

Cork had the second highest number of termination notices in the country with 475 notices to quit issued in a report published by the Residencies Tenancies Board yesterday.

Speaking to RedFM News, Councillor Mick Nugent says the result of the meeting was disappointing for the people facing eviction in Cork:

"I think many counsellors were stunned that the meeting wasn't allowed proceed, so in our mind that was disappointing, very disappointing, really, I suppose more disappointing for people tuning into meeting online are a number of people that were in the gallery who are facing eviction who wanted to hear from their counsellors wanted to hear from the City Council officials in a public meeting."
