Breakthrough Cancer Research has announced a €2 million investment in new research for Ireland's 7 deadliest cancers.

The Cork based charity, which celebrates 10 years on World Cancer Research Day tomorrow, is to run a new 5-year research strategy with an additional €2 million of funding to push forward
new research for the 7 cancers, which are responsible for almost half of cancer deaths every year in Ireland.

Many patients with these cancers lung, pancreatic, oesophageal, ovarian, liver, stomach and brain - have a lower chance of survival as they are typically diagnosed late when the cancer has already spread and it can therefore be very difficult to treat.

These cancers are currently under-resourced according to Breakthrough and poorly served by current treatment options despite causing nearly half of all cancer deaths in Ireland each year.

Speaking to RedFM News CEO of Breakthrough Cancer Research Orla Dolan says there are new knowledge means new ideas and leads to better ways to detect and treat cancer.
