Anglers in North Cork say four weeks have passed yet authorities are no closer to identifying what was responsible for a huge fish kill on the River Blackwater
Chronic exposure to a chemical agent may be to blame however the Environmental Protection Agency has so far found no link between the kill and discharges from nearby businesses.
The EPA is continuing to support the Inland Fisheries Ireland investigation into what caused the death of 46,000 fish on a 30km section of the river.
In statement issued to RedFM News the EPA says
"While no evidence to date has suggested a link between any EPA-regulated sites and the fish kill, it is not correct to say that EPA has 'ruled out' links to any particular sites or discharges, as the IFI-led investigation into the fish kill in the River Blackwater is still ongoing. The EPA's investigation includes discharges from EPA-regulated sites in the Blackwater Catchment, and we are continuing to carry out inspections, including an assessment of monitoring data, on regulated facilities in this area to support IFI's investigation.”
Speaking to RedFM News Chairman of Mallow Trout Anglers Club John Ruby says locals need to know if the river is safe
"It's frustrating for people around the town and anglers that want an answer, even people want to know, can they leave their dog back into the water because there has been a couple of incidents with dogs getting sick and things like that, and here we are still completely lost"
