Marius Rucinskas, who is originally from Lithuania, and now living in Cork City appeared at Cork Circuit Criminal Court today.

The court heard Rucinskas had repeatedly struck his wife Renata and tore clumps of her hair out when he attacked her over the course of almost three hours following a New Years Eve party on the 1st of January 2020.

The 42 year old also kicked, punched and forced his wife’s head down on a bed until she was close to suffocating.

She was later found in a distressed state and found to have a broken arm and leg.

Judge Sean Ó Donnabhain heard the defendant had been given a 15 year sentence in his native country for pre-meditated murder and false imprisonment in 2000.

The court also heard that he had been remanded in custody for over a year in relation to the matter until his release in February.

He was handed an 18 month suspended sentence suspended for three years once he abides a number of conditions including that he does not contact the victim.
