Human rights are being breached at Cork Prison as another overcrowding record is being broken
103 inmates are without a bed at the facility as cells are doubled up and prisoners sleep on the floor on mattresses
Cork Prison has capacity for 296 inmates however a total of 399 prisoners were in the facility yesterday making it unsafe for them and prison staff
Speaking to RedFM News Niamh McCormack of the Irish Penal Reform Trust says prisoners have a right to be treated with dignity
"The issue with overcrowding is that it creates conditions that are inhuman and degrading and so what we're seeing is today, one in four people in Cork Prison are sleeping on mattresses on the floor. International human rights bodies have repeatedly said that this puts people at risk of inhuman and degrading treatment, and they have a right to be dealt with, with dignity"
