A number of TDs have called on the CCPC to investigate after petrol stations hiked prices yesterday in advance of an excise cut from the Government.

But the State's consumer watchdog says it doesn't have a role in controlling how businesses set their prices.

Labour TD Duncan Smith says the Government has been taken advantage of:

"Minister, will you admit that you and your government have been played for absolute mugs by the major fuel providers over the last couple of days? The financial resolution passed last night by all of us has had zero impact. If you're on a garage forecourt this morning as I was, you see that not only have prices not go down, they've actually gone up."
