A City Councillor believes that if 16 year-olds will soon be able to vote, they should be able to have one or two beers.

That's the view of City Cllr Shane O'Callaghan, who thinks reducing the drinking age should be considered.

A number of European countries such as Germany and Austria allow 16-year-olds to drink beer and cider.

And Cllr O'Callaghan feels at that age, you're old enough to make an informed decision:

"In 2018, the Citizens Assembly voted by 18% in favour of reducing the voting age to 16, which I think will probably happen in the next few years. So then, you'll have a situation where a 16 year olds are deemed to be mature enough to leave school, enter full-time employment, pay tax, and have a say in who governs this country, and yet will not be deemed to be mature enough to make an informed decision about whether to have one or two beers".
