Homes and businesses in the city centre were plunged into darkness last night by a major outage.

Many streets experienced the blackout with Oliver Plunkett Street, Patrick Street, the Grand Parade and North Main Street all affected.

Almost 5,600 customers were impacted by two faults in the Liberty Street area, which were first reported after 7 o'clock last evening.

A concert in Cork Opera House went ahead, but later than advertised. Pubs stayed trading but could only accept cash for the early past of the night.

According to ESB Network's powercheck.ie, power was restored to most customers by 9:30pm.

Power has now returned for all city centre customers.

Meanwhile, over 1,900 customers in the greater Kilbarry area are without power this morning.

That fault was reported at at half past seven last night, but the ESB expects it to be rectified by 2 o'clock this afternoon.
