The city's Lord Mayor says "use it or lose it " legislation is needed to encourage building owners in the city to develop vacant "over the shop" spaces for housing
The City Council says it offers a range of supports for living over the shop and has been addressing previous challenges to renovating or converting above the shop vacant units
Lord Mayor Cllr Dan Boyle told the Neil Prendeville Show the owners of city centre buildings need to be incentivised to develop these properties
"We have to have legislation that's "use it, or lose it" It should be acquired by local authorities if it's not being used by private sources. We have to have a more serious collection of the derelict sites and vacant sites levies, because there's an incentive for people not to develop and watch the value of the land and the property itself, appreciate"
