It makes sense for 50km-per-hour speed limits on city streets to be reduced.

That's according to the Cork Transport and Mobility Forum.

Most speed limits in the city are set at 50km-per-hour.

However, the Road Safety Authority have suggested it be dropped to 30km-per-hour in towns, cities and around schools country-wide.

The RSA say a pedestrian hit by a vehicle going 30km-per-hour has a 90% chance of survival, but this drops to just 50 per cent at 50km per hour.

Speaking to RedFM News, co-ordinator for the Cork Transport and Mobility Forum, Darren McAdam O’Connell News says slower speed-limits are the norm overseas.

"The average speed globally in an urban area for a car was something like seven kilometres an hour. The idea that somebody would drive at 50 kilometres an hour through a city street is just crazy. If somebody drove past us here, at that speed we'd all be stopping everyone around would be stopping and looking at them.

"A 30 kilometre an hour speed limit is absolutely sensible. It doesn't increase anybody's journey time. It makes everybody safer. It makes the city more pleasant and it sends out the right message."
