The draft is one of nine parts of the BusConnects Cork plan to completely overhaul the bus system by making it more reliable, frequent and with shorter wait times.

People in Ballincollig, Blarney, Carrigaline, Cobh, Glanmire, Little Island and Ringaskiddy will also benefit from new high capacity routes.

The NTA have launched a six week consultation process for the redesign, which they say will pave the way for the future introduction of a Luas service in the city.

Speaking to RedFM News at today's virtual launch, Bus Éireann Chief Executive Stephen Kenny says they will be closely monitoring any changes to bus routes:

"When you put in the frequency, we put it in and we'll measure from there. And of course what we're  really taken into account in many instances here is that we have to get people out of their cars and to start moving them onto the bus and they start making those active choices and to combine that with cycling and active travel. And if we do all of that, we have greater certainty, and certainly will be much more confident about achieving those types of timetables."
