Gardaí will be making an example out of whoever committed an arson attack in Ballincollig last night
That's according to the chairman of the joint policing committee and former Lord Mayor of Cork City as Gardaí have launched an investigation into damage caused yesterday evening in a council playground.
Gardaí say no arrests have been made yet in relation to the fire, which occurred at approximately 9:35pm last night near the Lidl supermarket in Ballincollig.
It is the second arson attack in the area this week, with Ballincollig regional park having a long history of anti-social behaviour.
There have been campaigns for a larger Garda presence in the area as the station only operates three hours a day and closes on Friday and Saturday. While the Fire Station is only in operation on a retained basis.
Speaking to RedFM News, Chairman of the Joint Policing Committee in Cork city and Fianna Fail Councillor Colm Kelleher says a Garda investigation is underway:
"This is in a a more built up area. There's a HSE building adjacent to it, there's commercial buildings close to it and I do know that the gallery are looking at CCTV at the moment and hopefully the you know, the assailant can be caught and prosecuted for rigours of law because I really believe that there's a trend emerging here and whoever is responsible for us needs to be cautioned and examined needs to be made of an action such as this or behaviour such as this will not be tolerated."
