The average worker needs eight times their salary to buy a new home.
That's according to a new report by MyHome.ie which shows house prices appear to be easing somewhat, but only because costs are so stretched.
Asking prices were up 5.7% in the three months to September, which is down slightly on the previous quarter.
Chief Economist with Bank of Ireland, Conall MacCoille says it doesn't mean prices are dropping:
"I often hear people say 'are house prices going to fall back?'
"People's memories are coloured a bit by the financial crisis and what happened here in 2007 and 2008.
"But house prices very rarely fall in nominal terms. What we do see is a period of time where hopefully prices in crease at a slower pace than wages, and that means there's a sort of gradual improvement in affordability."
