Restrictions on admissions were in place at the unit for the past two weeks due to a lack of consultant cover, with local GPs raising concerns that patients could be put in danger due to the distance to the nearest Emergency Department at Cork University Hospital.

Hundreds of people protested the closure in Bantry on Sunday.

Local TDs also raised the issue was with the Taoiseach and Health Minister in the past few weeks.

The South/South West Hospital group confirmed that consultants will be starting at the hospital next month, however the lack of cover between now and then remained a concern for medics in the region.

In a video posted to Twitter, local TD Christopher O'Sullivan confirmed unit will reopen at 9am Wednesday.
