Rural pubs are moving closer to being wiped out unless supports are put in place
That's the warning from the Vintners Federation of Ireland which says the rising cost of doing business has led to a 30% drop in the pub trade in Cork since 2005
The steep decline in the rural pub trade in Cork has led to calls for a 40% rebate on the excise charged to draught products sold in pubs
70 pubs have closed across the city and county in the last six years due to the high cost of doing business
President of the Vintners Federation of Ireland Michael O'Donovan told RedFM News the rebate could be life changing for some rural publicans
"Nationally what we have from 2005 to 2023, there's been over two thousand and twenty three pubs closed in that time, which is a startling figure. The cost pressures that they're under to make them viable is just so difficult at the moment"
