The Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising is being marked in the city this afternoon.

A parade will commence at the National Monument on the Grand Parade at 2.30PM and travel to St. Finbarrs Cemetery.

Meanwhile, the Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising has been celebrated with a military parade at the GPO on Dublin's O'Connell Street.

A minute's silence was followed by an aircorps fly-by, as members of government and state stood to attention.

The National Flag on top of the GPO was lowered while the 1916 Proclamation was read by an Officer from the Defence Forces and the President laid a wreath to commemorate those who died during 1916.

"1916 historically was the foundational events in terms of the modern Irish state and modern Irish history. in terms of  self determination and Ireland's push for independence, and so much flowed from that then so it's it is the foundational event in modern Irish history in my opinion."
