107 patients are without a hospital bed in Cork today.

Cork University Hospital is the second most overcrowded in the country with 73 patients being treated on trolleys while in the other city hospital - the Mercy University Hospital, there are 29 patients on trolleys.

The Health Minister is today being grilled on the plans to address bed shortages and hospital overcrowding.

Minister Stephen Donnelly will tell the Oireachtas Health Committee a multi-annual plan is already in place - with overall waiting list numbers down last year for the first since 2015.

However nursing unions have already raised the seriousness of the matter in Cork - the unions says the two city hospitals are "dangerously" overcrowded and the situation is adding to the pressure on their members and the quality of care being received by patients at the two facilities.
