Calls for 18 month backlog in Marriage of Convenience registration services to be tackled

Calls have been made for an eighteen month delay in Marriage of Convenience registration services in Cork and Kerry to be tackled

The interviews are held where at least one half of the couple is from outside the EU

The HSE says there's been a significant rise in requests for interviews sparking the review and a temporary pause of interviews while it is being conducted

Speaking to RedFM News Fine Gael TD Colm Burke says while safeguarding the system is important it's leaving couples in limbo

"If the he system is streamlined, I  would very much welcome that, but this should have been done in a more planned approach, so that you wouldn't have this type of delay. And I suppose there was no public announcement that this was going to happen, and there was likely to be delays as a result of the review of the process"
