There are 22 fewer gardaí attached to the Cork city roads policing unit now compared to 15 years ago
Figures published by the gardaí and compiled by the Parc Road Safety Group show that, in 2009, there were 51 gardai in the traffic corps but by December 2025 that figure had dropped to 29
The figures reveal that nationally there are almost 400 fewer gardaí in roads policing units now than there were in 2009
Just 79 Gardaí have been appointed to the Roads Policing Unit in the last two years - despite a promise from the force to appoint 150 - five of those officers were appointed to Cork stations at Whitegate, Mitchelstown, Ballincollig, Douglas
After the first target of 75 extra members was missed in 2024, the force said it would fulfil the full 150 in 2025- a year when 188 people died on the roads.
