A 43-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of mother-of-two Paula Canty.

The 31-year-old was found dead at her home in Mallow in county Cork on the 3rd of January 2025.

Joseph Butler of the Belfry, Mallow, county Cork appeared in court in person, and after confirming his identity, replied ‘guilty’ when the charge of unlawfully killing Paula Canty was put to him.

Defence barrister Ray Boland, who is standing in for Alan O’Dwyer, said Mr Butler has a history of difficulty with substance abuse, and is remorseful about the events of the night.

He also said the accused had prepared a letter of apology for Paula Canty’s family.

Judge Siobhan Lankford ordered the preparation of a victim impact statement, and remanded Joseph Butler in custody to appear before the court again, via video link, on the third of June for the setting of a date for sentence.

An inquest in July last year found Paula Canty died after being stabbed in the thorax.
