A Cow in the Water play Crane Lane Theatre 9th December 2017
TWENTY years ago a local creative and artistic life ended. Aidan O’Connell, frontman to local band “A Cow in the Water” passed away. The band’s quirky songs were played in their own style
known as ‘mank rock’. Their eclectic musical influences, which included Stump, Half Man Half Biscuit, The Fall, The Smiths, Johnny Cash, Porter Wagner and Madonna, permeated their sound. Formed in Blarney in the mid-1980s, “A Cow in the Water” were an integral part of the Cork live music scene in the late Eighties and early Nineties.
“The Cows” created an avant-garde performance of alternative-pop and were regulars at venues around the city. They were known for their outrageous stage performances and lavish set designs with their trademark rubber cow udders — actually hundreds of inflated rubber gloves — being let loose into the audience.
They recorded a number of EPs, “Zodiac Vomit”, “Liver” and the hugely successful “That’s Not Your Finger”, but were better known as a live touring band. Renowned for their over-the-top stage shows and quirky sound, they combined hard driven guitar rock with brass overtones to produce a genuinely original sound. No two shows were ever the same. “The Cows” pushed back against the oppressiveness of the 1980s by adding humour and creativeness to their performances. Art and music was their escape and ours.

an end to almost 10 years of live performances.

This year A Cow in the Water will play a one off show at the Crane Lane Theatre on Saturday 9th December, to remember Aidan’s music and to help try to help raise awareness of and some much needed funds for Pieta House. This long awaited gig promises to be very special and as mad as ever. These guys don’t play together often, so get there early to avoid disappointment.
